Preface
Skilled, dedicated workers operate small transcription service organizations
across the United States. The noble profession is largely invisible to most
Americans because this important layer of healthcare operates behind the
scenes, in the hidden offices of healthcare facilities, small, discreet office
buildings and private homes.
Leaders of these organizations face many challenges: Demand for their service
grows, but qualified workers are not readily available for hire. Large
organizations have begun using low-cost overseas workforces, and there is an
additional, impending tide of change from the improving performance of speech
recognition technology.
The fragmented nature of this cottage industry leads it to change slowly, and
the modest size of typical companies leaves them without deep resources to
apply to information technology, research and development or political action.
This book is vital at this time because it gives the managers of these service
companies insight into how to prepare for the evolving market conditions. When
many drivers for change converge in an industry, an evolution occurs. Such a
step is usually good for the overall economy, but it generates turbulence that
can be difficult for existing providers to handle. Fortunately, those who
exercise courage in the face of such changes will find an opportunity to
leverage their experience and knowledge to achieve even greater success.
Drawing from this information, I hope to empower managers and business owners
with insight and resources to seize opportunity from the turbulence ahead.
